Putting the wrong fuel in your vehicle can feel like a disaster at the forecourt, but the next decision matters more than the mistake itself. How fuel contamination is removed depends on what entered the tank, how much was added and, crucially, whether the engine has been started. Stop, do not turn the ignition on, and arrange specialist help. In many cases, prompt fuel draining can prevent the contamination reaching the engine and avoid a much larger repair bill.

What counts as fuel contamination?

Fuel contamination means that something has entered the fuel tank that should not be there. The most familiar example is petrol in a diesel car or diesel in a petrol car, but it is not the only one. Water, AdBlue, old or poor-quality fuel, biodiesel and red diesel can all create problems if they are in the wrong vehicle or are unsuitable for the fuel system.

Petrol in a diesel vehicle is often more urgent because diesel also lubricates key components in the fuel system. If petrol circulates through these parts, it can reduce lubrication and cause costly damage.

AdBlue is a separate and particularly serious case. It is not a fuel and must never enter a diesel tank. Even a small quantity can crystallise and damage fuel-system components if the vehicle is started. This needs specialist removal rather than a simple top-up with the correct fuel.

The first rule: do not start the vehicle

If you notice the error before starting the engine, leave the vehicle switched off. Do not put the key in the ignition, press the start button or attempt to move it to a safer parking space unless there is an immediate danger. On some vehicles, switching the ignition on can activate the fuel pump and begin moving contaminated fuel through the system.

Tell the recovery technician exactly what happened: the fuel type, the approximate amount added, whether the engine was started and whether the vehicle was driven. There is no judgement in it. Accurate information helps the technician decide whether the tank-only procedure is suitable or whether the fuel lines and other parts need attention too.

If you have driven away, stop as soon as it is safe to do so. Do not keep going in the hope that the vehicle will clear itself. Continuing to drive can push contaminated fuel further through the system, turning a recoverable mistake into a breakdown or component failure.

How fuel contamination is removed safely

The technician will assess whether contamination is likely to be limited to the tank or has travelled through the fuel system. 1. The contaminated fuel is extracted

Once the bulk of the wrong fuel has been removed, the aim is to remove residual contamination. For a straightforward misfuel where the engine has not been started, this may involve clearing the tank and the accessible fuel supply path before adding the correct fuel.

If the ignition has been turned on or the engine has run, contamination may have reached the fuel lines, pump, filter or injectors. The technician will then determine what further flushing or cleaning is needed. This is not a one-size-fits-all process. The right response depends on the vehicle, the contaminant and how far it has travelled.

3. Filters and components are checked where needed

Fuel filters are designed to catch debris and water, but they cannot make the wrong fuel harmless. A technician may recommend replacing the fuel filter where contamination has circulated, especially on diesel vehicles or where water is involved.

With water contamination, the concern is corrosion and poor combustion. The tank must be drained properly, and the fuel system may need additional inspection if the vehicle has been run. With AdBlue contamination, affected components may require more extensive work because the liquid can form crystals as it dries. Acting early gives the best chance of limiting that work.

4. Correct fuel is added and the vehicle is tested

After the contaminated fuel has been removed and the necessary clearing work completed, the vehicle is refilled with the correct fuel. The technician will check that the engine starts and runs correctly before the job is finished, where it is safe and appropriate to do so.

If there are warning lights, rough running, an engine management fault or signs that contamination has reached deeper into the system, further garage assessment may be required. How the process changes by contamination type

Petrol in diesel is treated with particular caution. Diesel fuel systems operate at high pressure and rely on diesel's lubricating properties. Diesel in petrol is also not something to ignore. Diesel does not ignite in a petrol engine in the same way, and driving with it can cause poor running, smoke, misfires or stalling. Draining the tank before starting is usually the best outcome.

Water in fuel requires complete removal because water does not mix properly with fuel and can cause corrosion. It can enter through contaminated fuel, condensation in poorly stored vehicles or a compromised filler area. If you suspect water contamination, do not try to dilute it by adding more fuel.

AdBlue in a diesel tank needs urgent specialist attention. Do not start the engine, even to move the vehicle. The tank must be drained and the affected system assessed carefully. Conversely, diesel in an AdBlue tank also needs professional removal, as it can damage the emissions system.

Why DIY draining is a poor gamble

Fuel is flammable, harmful and difficult to handle safely. Modern filler systems are also designed to prevent unauthorised siphoning, which makes a DIY drain far less straightforward than it may appear online. A failed attempt can spill fuel, damage the vehicle, trigger fault codes or introduce more contamination.

There is also the disposal problem. Contaminated fuel is waste that needs handling responsibly. It cannot be tipped down a drain, poured onto the ground or stored indefinitely in a shed or garage.

Calling a mobile specialist means the work is carried out where you are, whether that is at a petrol station, at home, at work or on the roadside. For drivers dealing with a rental car or a fleet vehicle, it also creates a clearer record of the issue and the recovery carried out.

When a drain may not be enough

A fuel drain is often enough when the mistake is caught before the ignition is switched on. Once the vehicle has been driven, the situation depends on distance travelled, symptoms and fuel-system design. It may still be recoverable at the roadside, but it may require diagnostic checks, replacement parts or garage repairs.

Watch for loss of power, knocking, misfiring, unusual smoke, warning lights or a refusal to start. These signs do not automatically mean serious engine damage, but they do mean the vehicle should not be driven further until it has been assessed.
